Womad 2013

Better late than never!

glimpses of Womadelaide

wowee what a massive fantastic diverse inspirational festival!

i first attended 5 months pregnant with Lily way back when and was blown away with my first exposure to the music of the world and of such high calibre!

this year was a little different with two children and remarkable heat and the popularity of the festival meant huge crowds!

it looks great in photos, but i confess to seriously questioning my/our sanity in the midst of it all…

i only shot from my iPhone so that reflects my energy levels which couldn’t manage lugging camera gear {also the need to stay wet for temperature control…}20130404-091513.jpg

Lily gets wrapped up in Tangle! an excellent elastic jungle in the kids space. As each child entered the arena they are given a ball of elastic to tangle with while the band plays!20130404-091622.jpg

it’s over 40’c but Jesse is energized and playful as ever! rocking out to

Bassekou Kouyate &Ngoni ba

African camel riding rhythms and soaring desert voices from Mali20130404-091557.jpg

20130404-091519.jpg

Cedar watches alot of tangle unfurling then enters into the fringes of the fray…20130404-091836.jpg

Mari Boine, Saami shaman soul shaking tear making trance dancing vocal goddess. They have travelled from Norway {-30’c} and are pretty wiped out but humorous about the heat!20130404-091915.jpg

Blank Page was the only performance art I caught, we were all captivated by the skill and energy in this dynamic performance. 6 artists create the images to narration, at completion the audience is wild with applause and then the images are torn off to shock and the next piece begins! an awesome commentary on the history of art and story telling.20130404-091852.jpg

oh that clear blue Adelaide sky! sharp blue in the heat. Beloved puffs of breeze stir the silken flags above my weary eyes…20130404-091417.jpg

20130404-091446.jpg

hallelujah for the sprinklers, keeping down the dust and keeping up the smiles and energy!

IMG_1401one food stall offers mustache’s with every meal! we are thoroughly entertained!IMG_1412IMG_1413we are all impressed with the amount of cycling as transport  to the festival and in Adelaide in general.
IMG_1411mm orange almond meal birthday cake for Jesse. this was the most spectacular gift I had for Jesse this year!IMG_1407
IMG_1416another tent of activity Box Wars, saw all manner of things crafted from cardboard boxes. The most popular item today is fans!IMG_1417Good friend Mitchell Brown a rising star in the folk music scene
IMG_1418Lily participates in a Balinese soap carving workshop, the beginnings of a stone carvers training. she is the last child to leave the space and has impressed the balinese artist with her fine skills and deep persistance and concentration.IMG_1419in the kids festival is a set up by the SA museum which includes these familiar geometric mosaic tiles! a happy reunion for Cedar as ours have been in storage for a year now. he also impresses us with his concentration and pattern making.IMG_1420this plywood truck is popular with Cedars age group and the sides are an inspirational vertical garden with fresh herbs and strawberries.

Thank you friends
Monday was my favorite day more mellow less crowds
Jesses birthday in there somewhere
Orange almond meal bliss cake made in the morning with Lily
Squares of dark choc melt over if in the 40′ c heat
Neighbours from bellingen appear at just the right time to join in
Jesse’s parents swing dance over to the cake
Laughter and tears
All so hot and fragile and tired
And after it all Jesse flies to

Waking up to…

20130330-090804.jpg
Cedar and Lily where gifted this great set for christmas, they are just getting acquainted with the potential of it and we all think it’s fantastic!

20130331-092415.jpg
Lily and Cedar on different levels are exploring balance, construction, inertia and transmission. All through play!
Thanks Grannynanny and Gramfer!

20130331-092721.jpg
My dad also shared this type of play/experimenting/learning to my childhood which I am remembering now, thanks Dad.

Wool winding

Wind up the thread now
Wind up the wool
Twist it turn it
Til it’s full
‘lily’s composition this morning’

20130313-104952.jpg
New skeins of yarn from The Woolly Jumper in Tasmania
Hand spun and dyed alpaca. Lovely.
I put the skein over my feet and keep it tangle free as it goes over to Cedar or Lily who spin my new Royal wool winder and sing.

20130313-105206.jpg

20130313-105212.jpg
And very soon we have lovely centre pull balls of yarn ready for a project…

20130313-105256.jpg
I am very pleased with my op shop find for $10 and now will look out for an umbrella swift to make the job a single handed option.
I first used a wool winder last year while I visited my family in WA. and am again delighted at how easy this tool makes wool winding! Hooray!!
unfortunately now I will need lots and lots of skeins of wool to make good use of it…
Xx
What tool have you which makes your work easier, speedier or more fun?

Right now… (Public exposure)

Right now I am nursing a head cold
Flaking out in the shade (37’c)
In a country town park
Wearing my spotted quoll pajamas.
Do you think anyone notices?

20130306-121015.jpg

The land around is inland SA and it is
Parched
Bleached
Crisped
Felled
Disheartening
Slurped dry
Dust bathed
Fan forced oven baked

We are amused by this inner town irrigated green carpet and fall into the shade joyfully
Our trusty bucket is quickly filled
trice-wise and some wet relief and giggles are finally found

It’s been a challenging few days
long driving for poor old Jesse
Very hot
No one is sleeping well.
Oh dear how will I get myself together to enjoy the gift of WOMAD this weekend?
We are traveling fast these days but I will catch you up…
Just as soon as I catch myself up!!

Ps wet tea towels chilled in the fridge are great coolers on days like today

Bruny Island bliss

Bruny Island adventures

a long story with lots of photographs

It begins with

crankiness along the coast

IMG_0613

tired and tetchy

itchy and scratchy

we are at a frictious all time low {i think that every time we hit the downside of our cycle}

finally a camp at the neck campground and some play

IMG_0636

i remember to bring out the watercolour paints and pencils

IMG_0627 IMG_0629

Jesse remembers to play music

(note the kids cubby next door)

IMG_0637

which i tried to help with by request and ended up being screamed at

tempers are frayed these days

but Lily finds meditation in making a bush home for Cedar’s leopard

IMG_0635

we look for penguins late into the night

and are just cold and disappointed

{take a red light torch and lots of warm clothes, a flask of hot tea and make everyone be silent or the penguins will wait until the noisy crowd gives up and not come to everyone else leaves! making their young wait hours while they wait in the water until it’s safe}

IMG_0612

adventure bay offers us a little respite simply by being beautiful and we split up and take a child each and some space

but things are stilted and we are not flowing together

even filling our water tank becomes an issue

i am reminded that despite external surroundings it is one’s inner state which dictates one’s happiness

and that when one is happy one doesn’t mind so much where one is!

IMG_0644 IMG_0647

i start to pray

help us find a safe place to unfold

find a friend for Lily

find a supportive friend for Jesse

find me a hot shower and some nurturing

and then

like a mirage is Michael running down the road

ask and ye shall receive

oh thankyou!

IMG_0687 IMG_0662

Michaels blue bush palace has evidence of his seabound joy everywhere

boats, diving gear, surfboards, fishing tackle, shells, paddles, wetsuits, seaweed…..

He and Jesse met nearly 15 years ago and he generously invites us to stay a night

{which becomes two}

he has an abundant garden including a hothouse for the cold season

IMG_0362 IMG_0354 IMG_0355 IMG_0350 IMG_0359

and thrives on this and seafood of all varieties

he collects and dries his own wild seaweed for added nutrition!

Michael shares his warm heart and uplifting life values so openly

we can’t help but ease open too.

Lily and his son Brody become instant mates and Cedar is happy playing with his tonka truck

or shovelling sand

I luxuriate in a long hot riverwater shower…

We are blown away to have abalone prepared for us {me first time! ahhhh yum}

though at first i can’t believe these yucky slimy mess are so coveted

the bounty of Michael and Flo’s {current French WWOOFer}  recent dive

prepared with Michaels incredible {unusual} experienced process

IMG_0653 IMG_0657 IMG_0658

{not what they do in restaurents}

we are soon feasting

Cedar decides to eat nothing else!

luxury tender surprising salty deliciousness!

i cant quite fathom we are eating about $300 worth of abalone!

IMG_0673 IMG_0693 IMG_0694 IMG_0720 IMG_0721

Jesse and I look at each other and wonder how we got here?

while the men are cooking I wander about photographing the property

it is all blue, light, timber trims, glass and mirrors

IMG_0688 IMG_0698 IMG_0700 IMG_0708 IMG_0711 IMG_0715 IMG_0716

a lush oasis on Bruny island

IMG_0722

and then morning and Michael shares his passion for surfing with us

his clear enthusiasm is infectious and transparent

we meet the only other family on the beach on holiday from Sydney and wishing they lived here

i am fascinated by his {holiday fellow} hollow wooden surfboard, a beautiful play thing

IMG_0725

Lily gets her first wave! she is helped up to standing and then pushed off to ride to shore again and again

IMG_0731 IMG_0738 IMG_0742 IMG_0743

she is totally high

and freezing

IMG_0744

while the others are in the icy seaweedy water {swim anyone?}

i play ashore with Cedar

and engage myself with unknotting a 15m tangle of kelp I love this giant sea tree

IMG_0752 IMG_0753 IMG_0757

i slice some of the new growth to take home and dry

to add to soups

next is our beach drive tour of Cloudy bay

ending with a paradisical swim in the pristine turquoise calm side of the bay

the land is a stunning contrast of sea sky and forest

IMG_0768 IMG_0773 IMG_0777

it feels untouched and still enchanted here and i am deeply touched by the peace and bounty of this area

the children slide down a massive sand dune endlessly

Jesse and I swim and chase

while Michael catches up on some internet work

{and if y’all get over there quick you too can meet Michael at the awesome festival which he organizes!}

what a beautiful friend living an incredible lifestyle

I am so inspired by this man who is living his bliss

sharing his bliss

caring for and inspiring others

Thankyou for welcoming us in and encouraging the joy back into our hearts

IMG_0779

so a long story that started painfully, had a happy ending

and the finale was sailing the bus and eating a pile of fresh baguettes and cheese…

IMG_0378 IMG_0374 IMG_0375

sometimes i feel like the luckiest woman

Ship rock falls

After Dancing Ground
Bodies limber
And weary
After dancing and stretching
And expanding in happiness
And connection
Plans change suddenly
A double obstacle
And I am lost
Internally inflexible
The flow is gone from me
Decision becomes distant
Anxiety arises
Partnership confuses things
We argue mildly
I am tired and back in the big world after festival cosseting and catering
It’s inescapably hot
I don’t know this area or where to find a swim
It’s overwhelming as we try to lead our family with no reference point
We chase a train and find some shade
Hooray a patch of green ground
Jesse takes Cedar walking
I lay with my back on the cool earth
Old tree shade covers me
Air becomes cooler
Temper becomes cooler
Priorities become more clear
The panic abates as fast as she arose
Go gently
Transition kindly
Find water and shade and food and sweetness
Is it really so simple?
For today for me it is

20130227-132137.jpg
Later there is Ship Rock falls
A screaming step too close to a tiger snake who also wants the damp shade
A joyful explore of granite bouldery mossy water roaring tree ferny banksia woods with little man
A digestive coma after delicious orreciette with pesto olives salmon capers parmesano basil goat fetta more
Music echoes through the trees
I improve School Polka number 2 on the button Accordian
Children accompany
The world is right again

Later there is Kurth Kiln
rain howls and thunder blows
A safe camp to sleep in misty forest green
A playful morning
Road river races
Water churning exploring
Lily wants to eat the swollen river froth
Dripping ferns and bird songs and our songs
Cedar is the leader
Heart skipping with the scent of freshness and cool
How quickly the wheel turns
The sun rises the clouds part
Or how quickly my moods evacuate…
Hmmm

Oatlands

On our travels up and down the Midland Highway

we pass through Oatlands

an historical village set about an hour North of Hobart

we are lured by fresh Organic Stoneground Woodfired Sourdough bread

IMG_0050 IMG_0039 IMG_0049 IMG_0058 IMG_0046 IMG_0057

glimpses in the bakery

glimpses in the bakery

IMG_0040 IMG_0052

mmmm that ticks all the bread boxes doesn’t it

and not to mention local grains milled in the recently restored mill!

IMG_1022 IMG_1018 IMG_1025

Lily and I dress in vintage clothing and go on a date to peruse the gardens, heritage buildings and main street

IMG_1024 IMG_1023 IMG_1021 IMG_1020

beautiful dry stone walls abound in this area

we play and pose for each other and giggle alot and smell roses and lavender hedges and accidently knock an unripe apple down

There is a free camping spot on the lake front {where you can glimpse Thylacine on the far bank}

and there are many birds and topiary hedges to prune…IMG_1015 IMG_1009 IMG_0021 IMG_0014 IMG_0016 IMG_0036 IMG_0029

or you can park up next to the playground which boasts a giant didgeridoo tree with

whimsical native animal carvings and you can pick wild tiny tart plums….

IMG_1013 IMG_1010we feast on giant cherries and smile alot

and are blessed with spectacular broad sky sunsets
