Thyme to soothe a cough {another belated post}

Thyme to soothe a cough

IMG_0097

The beauty and the challenge of this gorgeous valley in NSW is the moisture. It creates lush environs and gurgling creeks and verdant grass and abundant gardens and also encourages mould and in some folks damp lungs and digestive systems.

With a recent bout of coughing which set into the children I was quickly onto the herbal cough and cold tincture (which they are happy to take as it contains a little licorice root so tastes pretty good)

The vitamin C, the herbal chest and foot rubs, the breathe easy essential oils, the onion in the bowl beside the bed ( settled Lily’s cough within 10 minutes and it was gone completely in the morning!)

Seeing this list I see an enthusiastic bombardment of support to the body, my theory at the time was to explore til I found the thing that soothed each individual.

Anyway get to the tea Rosi

IMG_0094

I put a pot to brew on the stove containing about

1 litre good water

1 cinnamon stick

1 handful of fresh thyme

a few slices of lemon peel

juice of ½ lemon

after it had simmered with the lid on for at least five minutes I let it rest for another 10

then stirred in a big tablespoon of raw honey before serving in those lovely mugs of our friends.

I simply kept topping the pot up with water and lemon juice over the next three days and the brew became so flavourful and delightful to sip on these frosty mornings and evenings. The scent in the house was divine when I lifted the lid and the soothing properties of the ingredients helped the inner wellness levels. Mmm

IMG_0096

I just long for good scents when I’m ill, and the comfort of warm lemony drinks

So happy to add this recipe to my collection

I hope you enjoy it too!

don’t wait for illness..

You could serve it with cinnamon cookies or honey popcorn or French toast or a good book for afternoon tea on a blustery day…

Be well

Mid winter Festival

bewarned

the below content is seriously out of date

but i uncovered these words today and i felt a connection still alive for me

and so i share with you belatedly

xx

Traversing the long dark nights of mid winter
I turn to gratitude and reflection in moments
While a light is also shone inwards at my anxiety and trepidation s of adventures ahead
The inner reveal is both joyous and cantankerous and truly everything betwixt

Last night we joined the Winter Festival at Lily’s school

(my first Chrysalis school festival the only other was joining Candlenut school last year, this is a trully beautiful post btw i am vewy pwoud of my sentiments from last year)

Each class created age appropriately complex lanterns of immense diversity and beauty

After the school community sang fire into the bonfire under the rising moon
We joined the children with their lanterns as they brightly snaked singing up the hill through the campus

to chatter with cups of soup and then be enthralled with storytelling and the spiral walk of the children.

each one taking their journey to the centre to light a flame and add their own candle to the brightening room

simple~ beautiful ~ enchanting ~ singing ~ darkening ~ centering

IMG_1905

Class 8 lanterns! stunning!

IMG_1907

I have previously made this style of lantern they glow so beautifully with stars
see here for how to

IMG_1910

the older classes walked this shining labyrinth while the younger classes where indoors walking a spiral or branches to an alter in the centre

IMG_1913

Lily’s lantern featured a tree dropping it’s colored leaves for the winter

IMG_1906 IMG_1908 IMG_1911 IMG_1914 IMG_1915 IMG_1916 IMG_1918 IMG_1920 IMG_1921 IMG_1923

yet my own personal connection to the festival this winter came later in a simple moment of lantern lighting and singing our own composition and bringing the glow through the garden and up to our friends smiles

our own song we composed when Lily was three in Fremantle, we put candles in jars and sang around the block with a friend, passing by our neighbours doorsteps with warmth in our hearts and the simplicity of our own festival.

~

we bring the light in the dark night

we sing the songs in the morning

forgive me. i have been so negligent here at RosaLindenTree. {gotta change the name one day, too long, any suggestions?}

so here i am banished out of the bus today for being too grumpy and crotchety {yes it’s not all love and coconuts.}

and i find happy refuge with a friends internet connection! yay. hours and hours of electricity. not a bad punishment.

so here comes a massive catch up with lots of photos and words! awesome.

get yourself a cuppa it’s really loooong…. but good!

a day after flying into Cairns, we are guided to Stoney Creek just north of the city, a beautiful cool place to land and have my first QLD freshwater dunk for the year and then take quiet grounding time to balance stones and add to the growing collection in the creek bed. i am so happy, jesse is so happy, the children are so happy scrambling about and crushing ochre stones. it feels good it feels right and i remember exactly why i am committed to this crazy lifestyle! and i am quickly recovering from my ten day solo pack up and leave Bellingen stint while sick and overwhelmed. thankyou dear friends who helped us and fed and housed us… right back to happy…

and then another day beaching at Four mile Beach in Port Douglas, if you head to the central or southern end you can completely avoid the holiday crowd…IMG_0259 IMG_0257

ah my boy, IMG_0255

ah my girl,

i think the above two shots could qualify for  the 52 week portraits (a year of portraits of my children

Our gorgeous friends from Sacred Oz have their incredible Message Stick Vehicle at home this week. I love closely looking at all the diverse Indigenous artworks from all around Australia and often find myself with heart swelling tears. a very rare photograph of Jesse and I {thankyou Michael} and it’s even a genuine joy moment! hooray

IMG_0013

and then to Davies Creek for a week of camping. it was trully blissful even though we arrived on a monday like last year, even though we postphoned the mondayitis to saturdayitis when we left the camp, even though it rained pretty constantly all week, even though i didn’t sleep so well by the rushing water, even though even though… these precious times i hold fast to as reminders of what is possible to experience in our family, remember this Rosi when the reality is far removed from this, remember to connect, remember to have hope, remember that it is not always so, remember to have gratitude, remember to give those little ones lots of hugs… remember, renember, rember, ember

IMG_0022

when we arrive, Jesse gets the fire on and smokes the whole camping area for us. The children get straight into the game of foxes they played here last year… note Lily’s long blue ears and their stripey fur…

serious rain business to dress up for, making channels for the smaller streams, floating things dowstream, splashing and getting the hangof the balance bike… and getting nearly all your clothes wet numerous times a day! aaarh IMG_0143 IMG_0170

above you see a variety of phases of coconut, in the silver bowl fresh water from a yellow nut as on the left. on the far right an opened young yellow nut with jelly flesh, above an older brown nut whose thick white meat we grate as you can see in the centre and the empty shell can be used as a handy vessel.. mmmm below you see a young nut with a drinking hole deftly cut open…{not my work, i am more savage…}IMG_0162 IMG_0156

noticing i didn’t photograph the rain moments so it looks so dry and fun…

we cope by making delicious food, playing games, reading, letting the kids play in the mud and water, eating something else yummy, going walking and splashing and adventuring, being patient, keeping the interior of the bus as tidy as possible while it’s a laundry site, allowing space and solo moments despite being so confined, making a bush treasure hint, crafting, knitting, writing, sleeping, listening to the water, singing…IMG_0173

had a little coconut frond weaving and made up this little flag fan… ahh it’s soooo hot… not, but it will be soon.IMG_0056

and this beautiful fruit bowl. more on weaving soon… maybe even a tutorialIMG_0190

inside crafting… the discovery of the one dot holepunch brings hours of amusement. poor deprived kids.IMG_0071

then this bear gets completely re outfitted by Lily lovingly.. IMG_0142

Just before departure we finalised this upstairs canvas cot for Lily, we had been dreaming it up for years and now it’s manifest and is awesome! keeps the floor space clear and Cedar has Lily’s up front bed  even though his little old cot was so cute…. Thankyou Marty for the help. It is two bamboo poles with a canvas cot slung between them. clever. good. smart. simpleIMG_0138 IMG_0174 IMG_0175

i’ve had a jaffle maker for a few years and finally christened it! yum. childhood goodness. {basically took so long because i am so uptight i refused to buy square sliced bread! i let go a little when i found some organic spelt loaf.. so neurotic. but admitting it freely xxx {i trully don’t care if you eat square sliced bread by the way, i will eat it with you happily i just love love love sturdy loaves of bread with hard crusts and chewy centres! i also have a few ridiculously stupid high expectations on myself}  ahhh liberation it was soooo yummy!IMG_0136

more good camp food. Babaganusch {spelling?} guacamole, vegies and roast spuds!

can you tell we kept our spirits up by focusing on the meals all week….IMG_0191 IMG_0193

Lily’s early birthday present appeared one morning… a slack line which has brought alot of fun and challenge to us all!!

Waking up to…

Sometimes our 1.8m by 6m home really feels like 1.8m by 6m!!
Waking up to chaos and cramped ness after the weekends work at the markets is over. Last night was an incomplete pack down and departure as I had a date with Lily, to kick off her birthday week, to see Tango Amor (brilliant Traditional tango music on Violin, cello and Accordian)
Hence this mornings scattering of random objects…
In a motor home everything really must have its place and be in it before we drive anywhere. Very quickly I can be overwhelmed by this scenario of disorder.
Remember the scene from the castle film where they have to move all the various cars to pull out in the one they need. It can be a bit like that around here. (Can you move the guitars, oil tin, clothing, books, wee bucket, didgeridoos, sticks, tractors and shoes so I can get to my toothbrush…)
thank you Jesse for evacuating with the kids this morning. (Self preservation mechanism!)
I know the space will take less ten minutes to be back to vogue living but far out! It’s a moment of remembering how tiny the space is we four live in! Is that less than 2sq metres per person?? We are a bit crazy… Or brave.. Or both…
must remember our garden is the whole country…

20130708-072840.jpg

Ps before this photo was uploaded its all ship shape and the eggs are cooking for breakfast:) (wow I can cope so much better than a year ago even though it is Monday!)
momentary madness
And Lily loved the performance as did I, she is so inspired by the potential of her violin playing and the ladies costume and sparkly stilettos…
When I grow up I can be like her…
So heart filled to share this moment with my girl and see her confidently imagine out another possible future of creativity!

The games we play…

In my main childhood kitchen there stood a tall narrow white cupboard within arms reach of our kitchen table. Running along one side of the table was a long pine bench my eldest sister made in woodwork. It could seat 6 or more but if you where left for last and put your weight on one end it would tip you right off. (I wonder where that bench is now…) our table was often stuffed with our own family plus guests and the cosy noise and simple meals stay with me. Mum how did you gracefully accommodate another few spontaneous guests to our busy crew and stretch the meals so everyone had enough?
Anyway the cupboard. Open the door and you will find top to bottom crammed with games! Oh joy what shall we play tonight? (today, this morning, now?) no one has to leave the hub to play.
Being the fourth child I was pretty savvy for my age and had to keep up with my elders and for the record I did NOT always cheat! I’m actually very skilled at strategy. So there.
Anyway the cupboard. Where have all those games gone by the way?
Such a variety. I never enjoyed Monopoly, but I did like Cluedo and Chinese checkers and Sagaland (the enchanted forest) and Labyrinth and canasta and Europareise(travel Europe) and Speed and UNO and memory (a german anniversary set with some gorgeous photographs and artworks and a few that scared me) and and so many more.
Many games came from our Grandmother in Switzerland. Perhaps every Christmas? Good Ravensburger brand board games and puzzles with beautiful artwork.
A feature of my childhood play and now a feature of my children’s play. I love love the game times and whether i am playing or overhearing Lily and friends it’s all warm and happy inside for me. (unless there is squabbling of course)
It can be a safe place for playful squabbly banter and venting and teasing. a place of togetherness across all ages, an ice breaker and a bonding tool. It’s good not to take oneself too seriously.
We have a few friends we play games with and I cherish these playful connections.
At my Mums there is still Often a game after dinner, Scrabble or Zilch (dice game)
One rare Christmas at mums with all 6
Siblings and family saw all the adults staying up late playing games. Fun fun wholesome fun.

Great learning is happening for Lily with her numbers and sums with Dice games.

What’s your top games and why?

Right now…

Just hours away from going home!!
Home to our bus, home to papa, home together.
20130626-151304.jpg
Jesse will be meeting us in the warm evening of cairns soon. I imagine there will be a green coconut or two for dessert and lots of smiling and that funny exhilarated giggly happiness of coming together again.
Ten days is not long on a calendar, but for me this time has seemed looooooong. I’ve been fighting off a bug And simple exhaustion from moving house 4 times this last month as we gratefully took up our friends house sits to see out the end of school term. Phew!! Thanks all of you.
We’ve stayed in a mud brick mansion, an A frame timber home with fire heated radiators, a shed house, a homely self contained apartment and finally a bus.
Gradually downsizing ready for our own bus!!

Holding steady for two little people when I’m feeling vulnerable is a task gigantum presently. The insight I’ve had is keep it simple. My anxiety lessens when I
Lessen my expectations on myself!
let food be simple. As one friend pointed out a lovingly cooked egg on toast is probably more nutritious than a stressed out complex cooked meal.
Make them eggs, smile and sit with them.
Connection.
Let there be mess. Really. It’s ok Rosi.
Leave dishes in the sink overnight and go read them stories and cuddle.
Let them play. Let them bathe. Let them help.
Ask for help.
Thank you everyone who cooked for us last week…
Have humor switched on.
Be honest with people if I’m not coping.
Remember this too will pass!
One day it will be in the past ( that day is today!!!)
Hooray. (Nervously)
Xx

Favorite read-aloud/early reader books

below you will find an incomplete list of some favorite early reader/read aloud books

probably aimed at age 6-12 though you know your own child and what’s appropriate best

i choose books which present good values and stories of human striving, good adventures which aren’t too scary and look for language which is not abusive

you’ll notice they are often set away from the technology of current life to bring imaginative and descriptive food to my girl

some from my own childhood or my mama’s, some from friends, the library, bookshops, online, second hand treasures, gifts and lucky finds

with no television and minimal media time in our family, reading brings a relaxing stimulus individually or with read aloud story time. Our collection of books is fast devoured and then reread so if you have any favorites to recommend me i would be so grateful! travelling allows so much uninterrupted time for Lily to read which has been an unplanned gift.

My reviews are spontaneous and simple, i just wanted to give you a quick idea of the content for ease. You can find these books online at The Book Depository if you have no bookstore in your town, there’s a handy link over there on the right of my webpage…
