Bircher Muesli Recipe and story

when i was a small girl

we lived in the West Australian wheatbelt

summer days frequently kissing blue skies and 40~celcius

after school the seemingly endless burnt orange gravel drive

shimmered and baked me

chasing after bigger faster sisters on bicycles

anxious in the hot vast expanse of golden crisped paddocks

i don’t remember a single tree on that km stretch to the house paddock

was there shade along the way?

and then i was there

pushing through the small side gate

often teary often late

there was our sturdy brick home with deep shaded verandahs

and my calm mama waiting in the cool dim kitchen with

hugs cheerfulness and

bircher muesli

sweet tart chilled textured cooling surprising delicious

was it so tasty because it was made with genuine swiss hands

and the apple grated with an authentic swiss bircher grater {so i call it}

what secret ingredient did you infuse this refreshing meal with mama?

mine never meets the reputation of my memory

so here i am now

on a meltingly hot day

waiting for my little to come dancing into home again after a long week

and i make bircher muesli

and think of cool kitchens and dark, even cooler pantries

{where i used to sneak crunches of dried pasta or other goods and lat on the cold floor

or draw on the back of door chalkboard}

now i think of

mama love

growing up

sour apples and yoghurt

i am blessed to be using yoghurt from the cows milk provided by yonder dexters

which forms a coveted cream top

there is an abundance of Bircher Muesli recipes out there in the world

i wouldn’t say mine is traditional as my bircher grater is still in storage and i chopped the apple instead…

you know i’m kidding right?

so I won’t do more than list the ingredients i used this particular time

2 handfuls organic unstabilised rolled oats

2 oranges squeezed over oats fresh from orchard

2 cups natural yoghurt from neighbours cows

1 handful dessicated coconut

2 tablespoons unhulled tahini

2 tablespoons maple syrup

2 tablespoons sesame seeds

1 small handful raisins

1 handful chopped almonds

1 tspn cinnamon powder

1 green apple from farmers market

1 green pear

1 banana from big market

1 handful blueberries

1 handful wild rasberries picked by a neighbour

mix and refridgerate

be inventive be flexible use what you have

the idea is softened oats yoghurt and fruit

i tend to soak the dry goods in the orange juice for a while before i add the yoghurt and fruit section

some people soak the oats overnight in the fruit juice til morn

for me that becomes a super digestible breakfast but kind of slimy and sticky, what do you think?

i forgot to add chia seeds, that might be nice

my mama used to put in stone fruits and grapes in later summer

and i hear tell she used some condensed milk to sweeten it…

is that true? did i forget any other special ingredient mamala?

Heidi and Peter bringing in the goats for milking

{we have only just finished devouring Heidi by Johanna Spyri these last days, now look at our new reality!}

an enjoyable chore surprisingly!

I am nowhere near as dexterous as these young ones on the milking front…

I had always thought I detested goat’s milk, but here… yum, so sweet and mild

throughout the day i listen for the tinkle of the bell in the orchard and enjoy watching these nimble girls scamper about, balance up trees to peg down tasty leaves or frolic about in that particular goaty fashion.

I am enjoying the developing relationship with these curious, opportunistic, character filled creatures and am deeply grateful for their delicious milk and subsequent cheeses which our kind friend makes! Yum

something to love on the farm…

I know I Know,
I said I wouldn’t be a breakfast blogger, but how could I resist when I realized this morning it was all from the farm around me!
Golden egg omelette with new potatoes I dug with Cedar, greens we picked a minute before they hit the pan, mums pickled peppers from last harvest and Keith’s sri lankan tomato relish… Yum.

A Denmark Day

Mama and I and the little ones spent a happy day browsing and completing errands in the Coastal Forest town of Denmark

After visiting the two op shops and finding some great embroidered linens and pastel Johnson Bro bread plates we had a tasty lunch at

while Nanna went for acupuncture Cedar Lily and I where playful in the riverside park. A pretty cool playground, some stately old Marri and Karri trees…

I had one of those moments again. one of those precious ones where my heart pauses and I am then flooded with sentiment as I watch my little ones in their innocence and fun and kindness and I give an enormous breath of gratitude to the gift they are in my life, and the beauty and clarity of sunlight and the cool scent in the air almost overwhelms me with the richness of nature and my place in it.

try and imagine how old this Marri tree is… All it has witnessed… the slow pulsating rhythm of being a tree… go and find one and sit or lay under it or climb into her arms and soak up some arboreal wisdom…

Yes Cedar is out and about in his pyjama jumper… he loves it as much as I do… It’s from Engel via Cambridge baby

oh how i love the scent of rivers,

growing up an inland girl the novelty of bounteous water is yet to fade…

the myriad of light refractions on waters surface amuse me endlessly, the green shade and becooled air which stirs about draping leaves becalms me

and refreshes me and i am enchanted in my thoughts as i move us up to the colourful delight of wool heaven!

I was getting distracted from choosing yarn for a bold project I am about to undertake of making Lily a short sleeved cardigan for the coming seasons from an Elizabeth Zimmerman patern resized to vaguely fit an eight! phew. I think I’m abit out of depth but looking forward to the challenge.

I chose an heirloom silk touch Merino, Alpaca, Silk blend and Lily chose a sweet sky blue tint.

Lily had been quietly amusing herself, when I appeared to check with what she was amused I saw…

You know those beautiful enticing rows of neat embroidery threads in every good crafting shop? well…

Mothers panic try to be calm…

“honey what are you up to?”

thinking…oh god We are going to be kicked out, no worse I will have to painfully sort these all out into colour batches and rehang them. oh crikey

“Hi mama, these where all in a jumbly mess, some kids been playing with them probably so I took them all off and I’m sorting them out!”

“ah OK good one that’s really thoughtful of you”

luckily shop lady overheard and pipes up gratefully that it’s OK and thanks to Lily

phew… phew… phew…

Cedar had been happily driving his new tractor and trailor around which we had just found beautifully made at the Denmark arts centre…

after this we perused the Butter Factory Studios and Alpaca Centre

I am in love with Alpace fibre once again and tried to convince my mum to buy an exhorbitantly priced Alpaca coat to no avail… yet…

I found Cedar a sweet duffel coat by Oobi instead and some fantastic local ceramics.

Manning farmers market

I jetted to Perth solo for a special event on the weekend (more later)

From the airport I picked up my brother and we went for lunch and a wander in the 

Manning farmers market

my dear friends who make the music of Laliya first introduced me to this market and I have looked forward to another visit

in the grounds of Clontarf Indigenous College the sturdy stone buildings are with their own stories

(some quite grim as it was once St Josephs orphanage)

St Joseph was on hand to welcome us with his little peace baby

and then in we wandered… under the beautiful gum tree shade

a hustle bustle

bananas three dollars a kilo is the cry

bounteous produce, handmade goodies, real bread, pastries, cheeses, fruit juices, plants, fish, coffee, eggs and on and on more and more

we linked arms and looked for lunch…

turkish delicious yummy spinach, fetta, sundried tomato and olive filled fresh folded pizza like dough thingy.. i cannot remember the name right now! if anyone does let me know…Image

 

 

oh baklava sweet treat of my heart… i have made this delicacy before. deceptively simple, i more than halved the sugar (which is why it didnt glue together properly) and increased the lemon juice… mmmmImage

 

 

i was feeling oh so liberated as a mama in town alone, and with a handsome intelligent fun young man to peruse with!

lunch was followed by delicious sourdough pastries with decadent caramelised nut centres….ooohhhhh

i had a second to photograph this before it was all gone, Max’s hand is just out of the frame on the right!

Bliss Balls

delicious and easy to make, bliss balls in all their variations are a yummy snack, and have some nutrition in the coconut and tahini especially which is always a bonus when making family treats! and no added sugar…

here is one of my simplest versions…

ingredients

flesh from one brown coconut (thick white harder flesh)

grate or pulse to fine consistency in food processor

1/2 c almond meal or other nut meal, cashew is good

3 tbsp hulled tahini

250g pitted dates

rehydrate with 1/4 c hot water and mash to paste

1/2 c mixed sunflower seeds and pepitas

optional tspn cinnamon powder or cacao powder

mix til smooth and good consistency to roll into small balls (i vary from marble to lime sized)

roll in dessicated coconut and keep refridgerated when not being munched!!

breakfast is simply porridge but accompanied by some new play things. thankyou family, well chosen compact quality toys…

Lily adores you and invents funny games to make us all laugh

later in the day after the markets, we drive to a beautiful creek and meet friends

it is oh so peaceful by the fire and the water

you are contented to play on your own and I watch you in your own amusement and watch your big eight year old sister teach our friend to knitwe eat simply but happilythe nature at the beautiful Shannonvale creek has me breathless

reflections on cool water like an impressionist painting

an endless meditation to watch the rippling mirror

before bed we light your candles and sing our birthday medley of songs

you look so pleased in a happy quiet way

you have had your first haircut ever today!

you look different my son

your face makes new expressions

my how you have grown little one

you love the moment, as we all do, gathered around you singing in the candlelight

Lily helps you blow them out as you cannot yet

you love it so much we have to do it again, and again

we all love it and you too
we have our yummy birthday celebration the next day in the park at Port Douglas

As its your birthday Cedar i let you eat the pancakes straight from the pan

you go so fast i have to get a second pan out so I can make a stack for us to share!

finally you are full and we have a feast prepared

this is black sapote (chocolate fruit) mixed with fresh grated coconut and fresh squeezed coconut cream YUM!mmm you are a watchful child… i read so much in your facewe sing and celebrate you Cedarand a second later…look at this boy! mmm the creativity of toppings is endless…oh yes we love our pancakes instead of cakes for birthdays!!

Watching children have fun, for fun

My playful spirit was so tickled to watch Lily initiate this game with all the playground (strangers) kids.
It’s rare to see them all cooperate spontaneously. All us parents where amused.
The organized eight! year old and her carriages.
It’s a gift of this traveling which allows us to be more free and brave to make friends and be a little more confident in the world.

A dear friend A is visited each week at her stall. Always dressed in the cutest outfits from mamas label LittleLom. Little love of mine. You can find the gorgeous recycled vintage fabric handwork of Mia and her sister on Facebook.
Today conveniently there where three chairs for three little tomato munchers.
A is a champ for snacking on whole fruit and veg and I happily see my kids do the same when they visit her.
It’s so simple. Veg and fruit are these tasty individually packed nutritious snacks of varying textures colors and flavours. Mmm
Why do we mess around with our good food so much, turning them into delicious but complex meals, when simple can be so satisfying?
Try having some little whole carrots, cucumbers and tomatoes on hand as easy reach snacks.
