it’s the wildflowe…

it’s the wildflowers

in full festival

Image

it’s the flowers

in every glance a hint of colour to be investigated

Image

it’s the flowers

tiny, subtle, gracious, intricate

it’s the flowers

beckoning me across the road and into the woods

Image

it’s the flowers

delaying me and making little ones impatient with mama as they spring on to new finds

(and me impatient with them for pulling me away, yes must go alone sometimes…)

it’s the flowers

invisibe to a casual eye

revealed with attention

unveiled with presence and patience

delighting all of us with their own groupings and gatherings

what do flowers communicate?

and here and here another another

it’s the flowers

which distract Cedar from falling asleep on walks of that intent

it’s the flowers

the bold red/orange/burgundy pea his favorite and each bush gestured and acknowledged

it’s the flowers

immaculate petalled orchids the queens

puffy pompom wattles

spreading cheerful red leschenaultia and running postman

tall sunshine billy buttons

minute pink fairies

countless silky blues orchids

spider orchids

purple pansy orchids

red beaks

dampiera

dryandras

tiny delicate fringed lily twiner

bright abundant cowslips

tall breezy jug orchids in mint candy striped shirts

at least five variations on the donkey orchid

black eyed pinks

and a myriad more I cannot name but love no less

it’s the flowers

the carpet of which trails our eyes through the open woodland

it’s the flowers

which bring me here in spring

it’s the flowers

whose essence and healing I soak up

it’s the flowers

the discovery of rarities a thrill each one thrillier that the last

it’s the flowers

in rain or wind or warm

beckoning a beautiful bouquet

in amongst the silver brown hued timber

it’s the flowers

enlivening and uplifting me

it’s the flowers

stretching my smile eyes and mind

it’s the flowers.

it is.

Manning farmers market

I jetted to Perth solo for a special event on the weekend (more later)

From the airport I picked up my brother and we went for lunch and a wander in the

Manning farmers market

Image

my dear friends who make the music of Laliya first introduced me to this market and I have looked forward to another visit

Image

in the grounds of Clontarf Indigenous College the sturdy stone buildings are with their own stories

(some quite grim as it was once St Josephs orphanage)

Image

St Joseph was on hand to welcome us with his little peace baby

Image

and then in we wandered… under the beautiful gum tree shade

a hustle bustle

bananas three dollars a kilo is the cry

bounteous produce, handmade goodies, real bread, pastries, cheeses, fruit juices, plants, fish, coffee, eggs and on and on more and more

we linked arms and looked for lunch…

Image

turkish delicious yummy spinach, fetta, sundried tomato and olive filled fresh folded pizza like dough thingy.. i cannot remember the name right now! if anyone does let me know…Image

oh baklava sweet treat of my heart… i have made this delicacy before. deceptively simple, i more than halved the sugar (which is why it didnt glue together properly) and increased the lemon juice… mmmmImage

i was feeling oh so liberated as a mama in town alone, and with a handsome intelligent fun young man to peruse with!

Image

lunch was followed by delicious sourdough pastries with decadent caramelised nut centres….ooohhhhh

i had a second to photograph this before it was all gone, Max’s hand is just out of the frame on the right!

Fresh Coconut Cream Curry

I have learnt the art of making fresh coconut cream and my goodness it tastes absolutely scrumptious!
Have you ever had it from anything but a can?
It’s abit of simple labour but definitely worth it.

For those of you who can get brown coconuts give it a go! you may just want to add the cream to your cuppa, cereal, cooking or guzzle it pure!
The rest of you… Well enjoy in theory!

Find a nice brown coconut or two full of water…

To break it in half over a bowl neatly, whack it around its belly with the back of a heavy knife or machete til it cracks and spills.
Now put the juice aside and grate the flesh with a coconut grater into another bowl
See the round pointed blade attached to a board you sit on below…

Return some liquid to the grated coconut, perhaps strain it. Stir through, it will go white and milky. Magic! Taste it with a mouthful of the flesh, mmm
Set aside again…

Now prepare your curry…
I used local onion and garlic and a friends grown ginger, chopped with my 18th birthday chefs knife (from my family in monogrammed leather sheath…)
Softened in My own made ghee! ( clarified butter)
Stirred with a locally made spoon and in the magic black pot

Measure out ones spices, I used coriander, cumin and turmeric into another locally made spoon…

I aromatise the ginger onion garlic mix for several minutes with the spices then add diced tofu

Turn off the heat and have some muslin or net curtain or some such at hand to squeeze your nut milk through into the pot… Can be messy but fun or make more dishes and squeeze into another bowl first, let your child help!

Looking good yet?
Add chopped veg of choice and adjust liquid and seasoning

Simmer til tender
Serve up with rice and yoghurt, chutneys etc…

Yum!
I’m sure you already know about making curry but I did enjoy describing the photos…
I’ve been thinking a lot about my Swiss grandmas banana chicken curry which I haven’t had since childhood. I thought it was a peculiar mix then, but now I’d like to try it again!

This magnificent coconut tree keeps on astounding me with the diversity of its uses and by products.
Green nuts with their incredible water, sometimes fizzy like lemonade!
The soft jelly like immature flesh varying through stages to firm oily thick white grate able meat.
Coconut milk, cream and oil
Oil for fuel also
Coconut shell for utensils and vessels
Fronds for shelter, roofing, walls, shade
Leaves for weaving, vessels, mats, hats
Bowls, baskets, toys, decorations,
Etc etc etc
Ever wondered why traditional island dwellers where strong and glowing?

In celebration of plant to plate, slow food, free food, foraging, local made, wholefoods, homemade and happiness!
Peace be with you and your belly

a little felting

I love being able to help my children live out their creative inspirations and see what is yielded…

welcome home, come inside…

hello, here we are!

it’s taken me a long time for two reasons

I don’t have a wide angle lens for interior photography

and

umm

my ego.

I have to face it.

I am house proud, and to be so public as to put it on the internet! phew thats been a process!

So I am humbling myself and facing the fear,

and I tidied up and cleared out the boxes of market produce and instruments (see the pile by the door!)

and our warm hearted friend has lent me his fabulous wide angle lens so I can show you the interior of our little home on wheels…

See I couldn’t get out of it…

she is a 1990 Toyota coaster bus, purchased as an ex school bus in 2005, with lots of help we have refitted the entire bus except engine

she came with a reconned 2H, 6 cylinder land cruiser engine, mayte…

we have raised the roof 40cm with an aluminium clad frame and extra windows as we are both tall.

It totally changes the space into a room rather than a den with alot more airflow and light.

we have a 3m awning which extends from the side there, still hanging on with the improvised attatchments Keith helped Jesse put up years ago!

a friend once entered and said something about how bohemian it was in here! I loved that!

we have used as much timber (recycled pine and jarrah) and ply to create a cosy atmosphere

coupled with beautiful woven fabrics and all the colourful acoutrements of our life

here we have home.

sometimes crowded sometimes jumbled sometimes irritating sometimes comforting sometimes tedious sometimes overwhelming sometimes adventurous

we have a luxurious king size eco latex bed with a wool top for total comfort. well really, you need to feel comfy if you happen to be sleeping in a car park!

Cedars’s cot is up on the bed in this pic above and it comes down at night to rest on the wooden chests at night.

The big square of timber at the bed end is a fold up table and also allows access to storage under the bed.

a proper kitchen sink donated by our friends in Fremantle

thats our grey shrouded Waeco 40L fridge on the right, it runs off a massive truck battery which is housed in the ply box underneath.

Here is Miss Lily’s bed, this doubles as our travelling seats with lap belts during travel

I am very proud of her quilt which is my first “proper” quilt I made last year from vintage embroidered linens and japanese floral prints

I entered it in the Bellingen agricultural show and picked up a prize! unashamed brag moment!

Cedar’s car seat is tucked behind the driver…

our newest edition on this trip is the high light coloured shelving along the right hand side and at the front in this shot.

This practical storage has been so appreciated, it’s main purpose was to house all the bulk organic food items I have in big jars in the kitchen.

its pretty full, there’s alot going on in here!

some bits are in eternal chaos and others are neat. Like us I suppose…

most things have a permanent home…

we cook up on the kitchen bench or outside with a small gas cooker. It’s blue, can you see it in this shot below?

the two big bolts in the floor hold up our 100L stainless steel water tank

and here we have

the bus dwellers…

I Saw Jesse go out for fruit and come back with this vintage Guild 12 string guitar (78) we think.
A bargain love!
Like most of us it needs a bit of loving to shine, but will soon be singing.

My growing stash of crockery for our next home:)
Don’t tell Jesse…

Our bus also got a treat today …

New front tyres… Again…
To keep us safe we get new front tyres every big trip and shuffle the previous ones to the back. $300 ea

The children got their fun at Muddys playground on the esplanade in cairns. Maybe the coolest playground I’ve come across, it extends along the water front with shady, age differing play areas and lots of water play.

Do you collect something?

Waking up to…

20120707-071123.jpg

I tiptoe out into breezy seaside dawn
Away from sleeping babes who keep me up in the night
Tide has encompassed the mudflats this morn to wash the sea wall
Small barricade
Between homes and watery sheeting slickery waves
I like this tidal renewal each day
It reflects my inner tide.
Sticky eyes glad for dim cloudy light
And look there the big glowing moon setting!
Ah a moment for me
A moment to amble and awake
At my own pace
Precious
I am tentative to walk the sand
As this is crocodile land
Feeling the fear.
This has been my work these last days
The fear the scared the worried the anxious
Am I really this person?
Was I always so or has it
crept up on me?
Wow its uncomfortable to be with
Shall I cling onto the awareness too?
Or let myself move
Shall I walk in the scary place
like this fella with a net
Hoping to catch some of life’s bounty this morning
And not think only of the big teeth which could tear at any moment?
Keep walking keep moving keep feeling
Notice my numbness
Remember the choice of my focus
Watch the thoughts arise in me
Fear disguised as other things!
Sneaky how it does that!
How to integrate my inner work
and be Present with my family in each daily way
Looking for moments of solitude like this mornings wander
Making porridge and reading stories and feeling the tears within
May I be filled with grace and patience
And strength within my vulnerability.
Blessings on the day
